there was a man
who fell
down
when the blue and the white
of the long months
came he
fell
down
he wrote a story
stay me with flagons
but after his last
fall
a woman threw it out
he smoked pall malls
and i lucky strikes
when they were
28 cents a pack

Eat
in amarillo
i stopped into an eatery
was it route 66?
and ordered
a roast beef sandwich
and
a glass of milk
a man came in after me
and asked the lady
can i get... with... ?
yes she said as you see...
she half-shrugged in my direction
we ah now sometimes serve milk with...
on the way out
i read a sign 'kosher'
i figured out i'd done something uncool
well i didn't know...
i was only 17 and
hitchhiking to california
my friend judith
escaped from
the nazis
her fellow danes
saw to it
her husband sam
liked pork chops
which he sneaked with me once
in new york
my friend judith
died years ago
i don't know why
nobody told me
i guess i was on the outs
no, i really was on the outs
i miss judith
